On Monday nights from November 25 to January 20, we open our doors to those in our community experiencing homelessness or in need of food and clothing. All who come leave with a lunch for the next day and transportation tokens. For those guests who stay overnight, beds are provided for a safe, warm place to sleep and breakfast is provided in the morning.

Register to Serve at Out of the Cold

Please check out the volunteer opportunities listed for each area below.  YOU MUST REGISTER individually to secure a spot.  Unfortunately, you will not be able to serve if you haven’t registered ahead .

Setup

Make sure the space for our guests is set up, clean and welcoming. This team will set up tables, chairs and the sleeping area.  This team will take care of any remaining clean up tasks from the bridge’s weekend ministries and will ensure the outside entrance to the gym is kept free from snow. This team will also place signs on the side/front doors of building directing volunteers to gym entrance. Must be available on Monday afternoons from 3-4pm.

Registration

This team will be the first point of contact for guests and the primary greeters as they first arrive. They will register guests for dinner/sleeping overnight, and also be available to answer guests’ questions and direct them to other services in the community.

Meal Coordination

This team is responsible for all aspects of making dinner from purchasing to cooking to plating. They are also responsible for making sack lunches for guests to take with them when they leave. Additionally, this group will clean up the kitchen and take care of any dishes.

Hospitality

You MUST be able to arrive by 5pm and ensure each individual is registered to volunteer. This group will be responsible for serving food to our guests, dining with our guests, joining them in conversation, and clearing the table after dinner. They may also offer after-dinner activities (e.g. Bingo, movies, music, etc) and other hospitality tasks to help make the guests comfortable (book table, hot drinks, etc).

Tear-down

This team will make sure the spaces are cleaned and everything is put back for our weekly church ministries and events. This team will put tables and chairs back, tear down the sleeping area, empty garbage, and mop and as needed. Feel free to come earlier and join our guests for breakfast!

Pickup Site Greeter

You will be responsible for being at St. George on Yonge Church (5350 Yonge St., Toronto, Ontario) to assist with greeting guests and communicating Guest names and needs/requests with Registration Lead (MOSAIC Staff/Security will be on site as well) until they have been loaded on to the bus.   You must be at the pick up site by 4pm.  If time permits, volunteers can prepare coffee and snacks at the Bridge to bring with them to the pick up site.

Back Up Team

If the other Out of the Cold volunteer opportunities are full and you would like to be placed on our backup list, please sign up here. If another volunteer is not able to fulfill their role, we may contact you to join their team. Please let us know what times you’re available and for which positions you are interested in.
